How do I use your favicon ?

Download the favicon.ico and place it at the root of your site, or use the PNGs from the pack for the modern tags (apple-touch-icon at 180px, 192/512 icons for the PWA manifest).

Does the image need to be square ?

Ideally yes. A non-square image will be adapted, which may distort it slightly.
