What is it for?

Create an image of your handwritten signature to insert into a document, a PDF, an email or a form. The background is transparent, so the signature sits cleanly on any page, without a white box around it.

Signing

Choose the ink colour. Dark blue is traditional on official documents, because it distinguishes the original from a photocopy.
Set the stroke thickness.
Sign in the drawing area with a mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus. "Clear" lets you start again as many times as needed.
Download the signature as a transparent PNG.

For a natural-looking signature

On a phone or tablet, a finger, or better a stylus, gives a much smoother result than a mouse.
Sign large, filling the area: the image will be scaled down afterwards, which smooths out small irregularities.
Go quickly, as on paper: a slow movement produces a shaky line.

Inserting the signature

In Word or Google Docs: insert the image, then choose "in front of text" wrapping to place it freely.
In a PDF: most PDF readers, including macOS Preview and Adobe Acrobat Reader, let you add an image or signature.
In an email: add the image to your email signature, at a small size.

Signature image and electronic signature

A signature image is handy for everyday documents: an approval, a letter, an accepted quote. However, it does not carry the weight of an electronic signature in the legal sense, such as under the EU eIDAS regulation or the US ESIGN Act, which rely on identifying the signer and verifying the document's integrity. For an important contract, a binding agreement or an official procedure, use the e-signature service offered by the organisation or a trusted provider.

Is my signature sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens on your device; the image is never transmitted or stored.

Is the background really transparent?

Yes. The downloaded PNG contains only the stroke, with no background, so it fits on any document.

Does a signature image have legal value?

It can serve as evidence of consent for everyday documents, but it is not equivalent to a qualified electronic signature. For important agreements, use an e-signature service.

Can I sign with my finger?

Yes, on any touch screen. A stylus gives an even more precise line.
