Go from a price excluding VAT to the total, or back, with up-to-date rates for more than 50 countries.
| You know | You want | Formula (20% VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| The net price | The gross price | net × 1.20 |
| The gross price | The net price | gross ÷ 1.20 |
| The net price | The VAT amount | net × 0.20 |
| The gross price | The VAT amount | gross − gross ÷ 1.20 |
The classic trap: to get back to the net price, you must divide by 1.20, not take off 20%. A price of £120 including VAT is £100 before VAT; taking off 20% would give £96, which is wrong.
| Rate | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 20% | Standard rate: most goods and services |
| 5% | Home energy, children's car seats, some energy-saving installations |
| 0% | Most food, books and newspapers, children's clothes |
Pick a country: the tool shows its standard and reduced rates, and country names appear in your language. For a local tax or a special rate, type it in the "Or another rate" field.
The United States has no national VAT but sales taxes set by each state and city: use the free field with your local rate.
Multiply the net price by 1 + the rate. With 20% VAT, £50 × 1.20 = £60 including VAT, of which £10 is VAT.
Divide the gross price by 1 + the rate. With 20% VAT, £60 ÷ 1.20 = £50 before VAT. Do not simply take 20% off the gross price.
They are the rates in force on 1 October 2026 for each country listed. Rates sometimes change: if in doubt for an invoice, check with the country's tax authority.
