Add a watermark to a PDF

Stamp every page with a diagonal or tiled text, with a live preview.

What a watermark is for

A watermark states what a document is meant for and discourages reuse: "Confidential" on an internal report, "Copy" on a receipt, or "For rental application only" on an ID sent to an agency.

Getting the settings right

SettingAdvice
TextShort and explicit, with the date or recipient for an ID document
LayoutDiagonal for a readable document, tiled to discourage cropping
Opacity15 to 30%: visible without getting in the way of reading
ColourRed or dark grey depending on the background

Protecting an ID document

Before sending a copy of your passport or a proof of address, add a watermark such as "For rental application - Agency X - October 2026". If the document leaks, it cannot easily be reused for something else.

The watermark is built into the page: it stays visible when printed and in every PDF reader. Every script works, including Arabic, Cyrillic and Japanese.

Frequently asked questions

Can the watermark be removed?

It is merged into each page as an image: an ordinary PDF reader cannot remove it. A determined person with advanced editing software could cover it, but that leaves traces.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The watermark is applied in your browser: the PDF never leaves your device.

Does the PDF text stay selectable?

Yes. The watermark sits on top of the page: the original text stays selectable and search still works.
